Night School 31-Beam Design & Stability; Tuesdays, 6-7:30 CT

This Night School Course will address the design of beams. Practical considerations such as member selection and construction processes will be discussed. Although beam sizes are often controlled by yielding and serviceability limit states, the design methods for those limit states are straightforward. Therefore, only a small portion of the course material will be devoted to these topics. Conversely, designing flexural members for stability limit states can be challenging. Information on local buckling and web sidesway buckling will be presented, but the lateral-torsional buckling limit state will be the primary focus. The importance of proper end connections and the design of beam stability bracing will be discussed. Design examples will be used to show common pitfalls and practical application methods for the equations presented in the course.
